The steps to creating a web application

From planning to production: decisions needed to build an operational application.

Define the scope

Define users, their tasks and business rules. For each feature, describe an expected result and possible errors. Also list budget, scheduling and existing service connection constraints.

Design journeys and data

Mock-ups make journeys open to discussion before development. In parallel, identify data, its owner and read or modification permissions. A permission displayed in the interface must also be checked on the server.

Develop and verify progressively

Build journeys in stages. Checks cover business rules, errors, access and integrations. Test target devices and browsers. Measure performance using realistic scenarios rather than an empty page.

Prepare production

Separate secrets from code, configure HTTPS and check migrations. Prepare a backup, rollback and useful logs. After delivery, test public and administration journeys in the real environment.
